Mornings are the most hectic time of the day. Getting the kids ready and yourself ready gives you little time to do other things. However, there are a few things you can do to make your mornings easier. In this post, I’m sharing 5 tips that will make your mornings run more smoothly.
There isn’t a magic wand to wave around just a little bit of planning ahead to make your mornings a little less hectic. Along with the 5 tips, there’s also a free to do list printable that you can print out and use to help you with your day.
Being pro-active with your morning tasks
I feel like my mornings are the fastest time of the day. Once the alarm goes off it’s like a mad rush until the kids and husband are out the door. With making breakfast, lunch, getting everyone dressed and presentable for the day it’s like we are moving in fast forward.
It doesn’t stop there. Making sure that everyone has what they need for the day is another obstacle we face each day. I don’t know how but it seems like a few times a week I find myself running some forgotten item to my family.
With our mornings like this, I can’t even get started with my day a few hours after everyone was supposed to be at school or work.
I didn’t want to wake up any earlier so I needed to change something else and that’s how I came up with these 5 tips that I’m sharing with you today.

What I started to do was adding a few tasks to my evening routine to help with my mornings. They were tasks that I was doing every morning that could be done in the evening. This allowed me to free up some time each morning so it didn’t feel like we were running late every morning.
Do the dishes the night before…
I know what you are thinking… What does doing the dishes have anything to do with making my morning easier? Well, how long does loading the dishwasher and waiting for the dishwasher to run? My dishwasher takes about 2 1/2 hours to run. It probably takes 5-10 minutes to rinse and load the dishwasher. So there you are, you are saving yourself about 2:45!
Most dishwashers have a delay button that you can utilize. So why not load the dishwasher and put a delay on it. The dishes are being cleaned while you are sleeping. How cool is that! Then when you go out to the kitchen to start breakfast or get your caffeine on you’ll have a dishwasher full of clean dishes and you will not start your day behind on dishes.
Not only is this a time saver, it’s a money saver and a noise saver. Electricity is cheaper in the middle of the night. Why not take advantage of that fact and run a load while you’re sleeping.
Unless you have an ultra quiet dishwasher, you’re going to have to deal with the noise. You may be talking louder, turning the volume up on the TV, whatever it is you are going to adjust. This is another great reason to make sure your dishes are done while you are sleeping.
Prep your coffee…
Prep your coffee! What can I say I’m a true north-westerner. I am owning my Pacific Northwest roots. Coffee is my morning lifeline. Without it, I would be bumping into walls and just stare out into space trying to figure out what the heck I am supposed to be doing.
Most coffee makers have a timer or delay on them. After getting those dishes done turn to your coffee pot and grind the beans, add the grinds and water set the timer and you will have nice hot fresh coffee in the morning. Again a tool working for you before you get up. It is the little things in life that makes it all better!
Prep your breakfast…
Prep your breakfast! This is a big time saver. I am a firm believer that everyone needs to start off the day with a proper breakfast. My husband and I go between oatmeal or waffles and my youngest is on a bagel kick right now.
On grocery shopping day I make a weeks worth of breakfast by bagging up the dry ingredients. In the morning, all I have to do is dump the dry ingredients into a bowl or pan (depending on if it’s oatmeal of waffles) and then add the wet ingredients. Everyone eats breakfast and there are no excuses.
Set aside some quiet time…
Stay unplugged for a period of time. This may be the hardest for most. I know that it is for me. Once I sit down in the morning to check email and text that have come in from overnight it becomes a time vacuum, I have no idea where the time has gone.
So what I do is not check my phone or computer until breakfast has been made and everyone is out of bed before I sit down to start working. If you can go 10 extra minutes before checking your phone or computer think about the extra stuff you could accomplish.
Lately, I am trying to go 1 day a week without checking my phone or email until after I do a quick tidy up of the house. By doing this, I have a much more productive morning.
Create a daily to-do list…
Now on to my last tip, and that is getting a to-do list. I am addicted to lists, to do list especially. I become overwhelmed and stressed out without my list. The list keeps me on track, keeps me focused, and keeps me remembering everything I need to take care of for the day.
I like the paper form so I can glance down at any time to see where I am at with my day. Once I’m done with something, I simply cross it off my list and start on the next thing. I have tried online calendars, I have found printing out a daily sheet helps me the best. It very well could be the psychology of it, my mini wins when I cross something off the list.
The night before, I print this to do list out and plan out my day. I check the monthly schedule for different appointments and also check out today’s to do list to see anything I may not have gotten to or had made note of to take care of tomorrow.
