I woke up this morning completely unmotivated. It was one of those days where I would have loved to lay back down, throw the covers over my face, and just give in.
Why didn’t I just give in?
In this post, I’m going to show you how I was able to get my butt out of bed and turn my day into one of my most productive days ever. I’m going to explain why you need to start setting priorities for yourself and what it takes to make it happen.

Let me know if this sounds familiar. The alarm goes off, you look at it and think umm HELL NO! It’s warm. It’s comfortable. I don’t want to! The only problem is you’re not 2 anymore so the temper tantrum doesn’t work on yourself.
This happens to me.
When this happens to me, I ask myself, where do you want your mind to be? Do you want to be unhappy today? Do you want to be happy today?
I choose happiness 99.9% of the time.
However, just choosing to be happy is not all that it takes.
Your mind is a powerful tool. You can have it working for you and you can have it working against you.
I wish it was as easy as thinking to myself, I’m going to choose to be happy today. That inner voice can over turn your thought quickly.
So this morning when I woke up completely unmotivated, ready to throw the covers over my head and call it a day, what changed?
I got up. Looked at myself in the mirror and said, “I choose happiness today”. Then, I went to my to do list (that I had filled out the night before) and said, “Jenn, you’ve got this”.
I grabbed my book, sat on the couch, and started my morning routine.
It didn’t stop there. My mind kept fighting back.
Every time my inner voice would say quit. I got up, went to a mirror, looked at myself, smiled, and said, “It is a great day!” Went back to what I was doing.
This took me about 3 times for my mind to finally “fall into line”.
I’m going to share the 3 simple things that you can start doing now to change your mindset to create a day of your dreams. These 3 simple things that I’m sharing are things that you can start right now. You will not need to go to the store. These are simple things that you can start right now.
Giving yourself positive affirmations
This isn’t a new age type of mumbo jumbo. Your positive affirmations are a way of internally picking yourself up.
So before when I just wasn’t feeling it and my mind was fighting me, I would get up and look at myself in the mirror and tell myself the opposite of what I was feeling.
Your mind is a powerful tool. If you are thinking doom and gloom, your result will be doom and gloom. So, let’s break that cycle.
Going to the mirror slouched over and telling yourself, in a depressed voice, the opposite of how you are feeling isn’t the only thing you have to do. You need to convince yourself that you are the opposite of how you are feeling.
So instead of just walking to the mirror and saying, today is going to be a great day. You need to stand up straight, smile, and say today is going to be a great day with conviction and passion.
By changing your attitude while you say today is going to be a great day, you are selling your mind on the idea of a great day.
Let’s talk about affirmations and how you can create them and put them to use into your daily life.
Affirmations is a great way to start your day during your morning routine, you can spend 5-10 minutes in front of the mirror building yourself up by building a list of affirmations to say.
How to get started with affirmations?
This is the one thing that really got me, I had no idea where to start. Mostly, I was over thinking the entire affirmation thing.
Here are the 4 things to consider when creating your affirmations:
- Keep them positive
- Keep them short and sweet
- Make them true statements
- Keep them relevant to you
Keeping them positive, yes, this is what is going to help you lift you out of your funk. Saying things like, you got this, or today is going to be a great day are things that are positive and not too hard to sell to yourself.
Short and sweet statements! No one has time to memorize long paragraphs. When you’re bummed you are not going to have the energy to read a paragraph of positive thinking. You’ll read a couple of sentences, put the paper down, and go back to bed.
Pick out about 5-10 different short and sweet statements that you can put down on a piece of paper or on note cards. You’ll have easy access to your affirmations whenever you need them.
Make the true statements, you cannot lie to yourself. If you don’t believe the statement how are you going to sell it to yourself?
Now, telling yourself it’s going to be a good day, technically isn’t a lie, because you cannot see into the future.
All of your affirmation need to be relevant to you and that current situation. So I suggest, creating affirmations for different areas you may need them. If you have no idea if you’ll need them in other areas, just stick with motivation affirmations.
Now, the million $$ question is where are you going to find motivational affirmations? Why Google of course! I just Googled motivational affirmations and 617,000 results showed up! It is safe to say, that there will be no problem finding 5-10 affirmations to use.
My next suggestion to changing your mindset is…
Getting some exercise!
I’m a huge believer of getting that blood pumping when you are feeling completely unmotivated to do anything.
Exercise is going to give you endorphin, remove you from your current situation, and completely get your mind off of whatever is holding you back.
Here are some awesome things you could do to get your blood pumping:
- go for a walk
- go for a jog
- do a 10-20 minute HIIT workout
Those are just a few examples of what you could do to get your blood pumping. I recommend taking 10-20 minutes to really allow this to take effect.
Going for a walk or run will remove you from the situation completely. Getting outside and into the fresh air can completely change your mindset.
Doing a HIIT workout or a yoga workout will allow you to get your mind off of your unmotivated feeling and allow you to focus on the task at hand.
By completing some form of exercise, your mind will thank you in the end.
Now, onto my last tip of how to change your mindset…
Do something that makes you happy
If you’re walking around with a dark cloud over your head, why not try to cheer yourself up by doing something that makes you happy?
Changing your mindset is all about redirecting your mind into a positive area.
Here’s my suggestion to you, create a list of 3-5 things that are quick and simple things that make you happy. When you are having one of those dark cloudy days, pull out your list of items are trying one out.
You’d be surprised how quickly you can turn yourself around in no time.
So what kinds of things could you include in your list?
Is there a YouTube video that makes you happy? I love cute cat videos. When I’m having a really bad moment, I find myself watching cute cat or kitten videos. Boy, do I feel better!
Sit down, and think about 3-5 things that make you smile, laugh, or just plain happy.
