Create your own DIY Abstract Canvas Painting. You’ll save yourself so much money by painting your own abstract art canvases. These boho inspired abstract canvases are easy to make and budget-friendly.
I love art but I was not blessed with drawing or painting skills. Even creating abstract art was hard for me to create until now. These DIY abstract canvas paintings were really easy to create and I’m going to show you how.
I’m going room by room in my home giving it a much-needed facelift. Right now I’m working on my daughter’s room. We’ve updated her closet and I added some wall mirrors. Next up are some canvas paintings.
As I was scrolling through Pinterest I fell in love with some abstract art however, I did not fall in love with the price. They wanted $40 a piece so I decided to make my own.
DIY Abstract Canvas Painting
I know I can’t draw or paint so I decided to design the images online and make stencils using my Cricut and make my own DIY Abstract Canvas Painting. Good news for you, you can download the file and make these yourself!
Supplies you’ll need:
The supplies you’ll need are simple.
- Canvases – I used 11×14
- Craft Paint – I had the craft paint on hand. You can use whatever color combination you’d like. I went for pink, tan, and orange.
- PDF stencil – This is optional. If you can draw then you don’t need this step.
- Vinyl – This is to make the stencils. I have a big stash of vinyl colors I’ll never use so I used those for the stencil.
- Cricut – Again, this can be skipped if you intend to freehand your abstract art.
- Large needle – I created an abstract face on one of the canvases and used a large needle for this step.
- Thread – I used dark grey thread for this step.
Step 1 make the stencil
The first step is to make the stencil. I designed the abstract art and then cut it out using my Cricut using vinyl that I won’t be using for other projects.
Step 2 transfer the stencil
Next, I used clear contact paper to transfer the stencil to the canvases. This makes it very easy to keep the stencil aligned correctly and it prevents the vinyl from sticking to itself.
Step 3 paint
The next step is to paint the canvases. I chose muted colors pink, orange, yellow, blue, and green. Then mixed craft paint together to achieve these colors. I allowed them to dry for an hour before removing the stencils.
Step 4 Sew the abstract face
The final step for the DIY abstract canvas painting was to add the abstract face to one of the canvases. I’ve seen these all over and thought it would be a cute addition to the canvas paintings.
To do this I printed out the face and poked holes in the canvas using the printout as a template.
I followed up by back stitching with a large thread and needle with grey thread.
Making your own abstract canvas paintings
This project was very simple and cost me $7 total. I had everything on hand except for the canvases. I purchased an 8 pack for $7 from my local craft store. Used common craft paint, a few foam paint brushes and extra vinyl I had on hand.
You can save a ton of money making your own home decor. You’ll have fun and before you know it a perfectly decorated home.
