Whip up this really simple DIY Behind The Couch Table using new or wood you’ve got laying around the house. All you need are some 1×2’s and a 2×6 to complete this simple sofa table.
As I’m slowly going through my family room update. One thing that was missing was a table to place behind the couch. I made our coffee table and most everything else in this room
I wanted something simple and I just couldn’t find anything I liked that didn’t cost an arm and a leg.
I always have wood lying around so I came up with a zero-cost DIY behind the couch table that really easy to make. Win-win.
How do you make a simple sofa table?
To make this simple sofa table I used wood I had available from an old garden bed that I just removed. The wood from that project was 2×6 and 1×2’s.
I used the 2×6 as the top of the table and used the 1×2’s as the legs.
Even if you don’t have wood lying around this project won’t cost you much. 1×2’s are usually under $3 and 2×6 will run you about $6 or less.
Supplies to Make a Sofa Table
The supplies I used for this DIY behind the couch table are:
- 1 – 2×6 at 36″
- 8 – 1×2 at 30″
- 16 – 2″ wood screws
- 8 – 3″ wood screws
- Chalk paint
- Paint brush
- Wood glue
How to make a simple couch table
I started off by cutting the wood down to size. I wanted the table to be hidden from the front so I measured our couch and got 32″. I also had 3 foot gap behind the couch so that’s how I came up with the measurements.
The table is 36″ long and 32″ tall and 5 1/2″ wide (since I used a 2×6).
Once the wood was cut down to size, I sanded all of the wood and wiped them down. I added 2 coats of chalk paint to the 2×6.
For the legs I wanted a chippy look so I first applied some Vaseline to parts of the legs. This makes peeling the paint really simple and give a chippy look while also conditioning the wood.
Once the paint dries take a paint scraper to the 1×2’s to scrape the Vaseline off. This is really simple and takes just a moment.
Make sure you have paper towels next to you to wipe off your paint scraper. This makes for a cleaner time.
How to assemble a DIY Behind the Couch Table?
After the paint was dry it was time to assemble the sofa table. To make the legs, make an L with the 1×2’s. Add some wood glue and attach with 2 2″ wood screws.
Once the legs have been assembled it’s time to attach them to the top (the 2×6). Add a little wood glue and attach them with 3″ wood screws.
Now that the legs are added to the top, you’re done! It really is that simple.
How long should a couch table be?
Your couch table can be as long or as short as you need it. I built this 36″ long because that was the space I had to work with.
Sofa tables should be no taller than the height of the sofa back. As far as the length, you can make this anywhere from half of the length to the full length of your sofa.
It really is up to you and what you need or what look you are going for. Since you are making this yourself, you can make this table the size that suits your needs.
What is the name of the table behind the couch?
That’s a great question! The table is a table with many names. They are known as sofa tables, console table, hall tables, or my favorite, behind the couch table.
Where do you place a sofa table?
The most common place fora sofa table is to place it directly behind your sofa. The give a surface to place lamps, photos, and other decorations and give the back of your couch a more inviting appearance.
I really hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Stop back in just a few for the update when I decorate this sofa table.
