Getting your deck ready for summer tips
During the fall and winter we spend so much time inside our homes, once the warmer weather hits I want to spend as much time outdoors. A back deck is kind of an extension of a home’s living space. In order to have an extension of your homes living space it’s important to set up your deck so you have a place to enjoy during the beautiful warmer months.
I spend most of my spring and summer outside. In order to do that I have a list of things I do to get my deck ready for summer.
Summer deck maintenance tips
Clean the deck
The first thing to get your deck ready for summer is to fully clean the deck. It’s important to remove any moss, dirt, and or grime that has set in over the fall and winter. You can use a deck cleaning solution or a simple mixture of baking soda, water, and a scrub brush.
Stain and seal
If you have a wooden deck like I do, you’ll want to restain and seal your deck. I use a stain and seal all in one. It’s really easy to apply and then you’re good to go.
Please note that not all decks need to be resealed each year. However, I do reseal my deck yearly because we get a lot of rain in the fall and winter. And during the summer we have long days with a lot of direct sunlight. The combination of the two does cause the sealant to break down and not last years like the containers say.
Time to decorate
Add a rug
Once your deck is clean and ready for summer, it’s time to add an outdoor rug. This will help extend the life of your deck seal, and it will make your deck barefoot friendly. The rug will add softness, color, and a bit of added decor to your back deck.
Clean your outdoor furniture
After the long storage season, it’s important to clean your outdoor furniture before the big warm season starts. Start off by washing your tables and furniture without the cushions. Make sure all of the dirt and grime is removed, you can use Simple Green or simple household dish soap for this step.
Once the furniture is clean, it’s important to clean the cushions, start off by removing the cushion covers and washing those. You can use a hose and Simple Green for this step. Hang the covers to dry, and then put them back on the cushions.
Adding some string lights will give your backyard space some ambiance. They look amazing after sunset to give your deck a perfect glow.
Finish off getting your deck ready for summer you’ll want to add plants, flowers, candles, and some of your favorite decor.
Adding plants and flowers
First off add a few planters filled with a combination of flowers and green plants. Adding potted trees will do a lot to fill a space. You can bring those inside during the colder months.
Add a few planters with flowers that will continue to bloom, grow, and fill in. I love to plant pansies which gives a season filled with flowers that bloom over and over.
A summer deck is not complete without some candles. I make new citronella candles each year to keep the bugs away. I love to burn them and sit out and ready a book and get some sun during those warm summer days.
Blankets and Pillows
Add a bit of comfort and style to your summer deck with some blankets and pillows. In my opinion blankets and pillows belong in almost every room. I love to curl up and be comfortable and pillows and blankets will do that.
Other odds and ends
To finish off getting your deck ready for summer you’ll want to accessorize. Complete side tables and your coffee table with some decor that is outdoor friendly. A ice tea set, candle holders, or plant stands will do a lot to complete your summer deck.
