Sleep hygiene is a relatively new phrase and an idea that’s come to light, but it’s one that’s incredibly important and should be paid attention to. After all, you need to have a healthy sleeping routine on your hands, to make sure you’ve got plenty of hours of kip in the bank and the chance to feel happy whilst you’re doing it! So here are a few pointers for you to look through, to be sure you’re doing your best for making sure you’ve got a clean sleeping schedule and plenty of energy as a result.
What Time Do You Go to Bed?
Maybe at 10 pm? Maybe you stretch it out to 11 pm? Maybe you’ve not been slipping under the covers until about 2 or 3 in the morning recently? Either way, it’s bad for your body to have widely different times to get ready to sleep for.
Going to bed at the same time every night is the best way to establish a sleep baseline with your body and to make sure you’re always feeling tired around the same hour every night. If you have a regular bedtime, and you stick to it, you’re going to manage to sleep throughout the night a lot better, and wake up rested in the morning. After all, your brain and body get used to hitting the hay at that time, and has the space and time to relax fully into sleep for a full 7 or 8 hours!
How Dark is Your Room?
The atmosphere of the room you sleep in has a lot to do with how well you sleep. If it’s too hot or cold you’re going to be uncomfortable, and if the bed isn’t soft or firm enough, you’re going to be uncomfortable! But if you don’t even have a suitably dark room to fall asleep in, then you’re going to have little chance of cleaning up your sleep hygiene.
Your brain doesn’t need distractions at bedtime, and it needs enough darkness to produce the right hormones to slip your body into the sleeping mood. Too much light and you’ll be producing to much melatonin, and that’s going to wake you right back up again.
Have You Got the Right Mattress?
Speaking of having the best environment to go to sleep with, let’s think about your bed. How much do you love the mattress beneath you and the duvet and blankets on top of you? Are you always being lulled into the land of nod by a soft base and a warm cover? Or do you sometimes feel like the Princess trying to sleep on top of the pea?
Well, it might be time to get yourself something like an oliver smith mattress – hybrid mattresses are the best option for people who don’t know their sleeping type and are desperately trying to work on their sleep hygiene.
It’s time to give your sleep a shower and tuck yourself in!
