Choosing a rug for any room of your home can be quite overwhelming. I’m going to show you how to choose a rug. I’m going to cover questions like what size, color, and style of rug to make any room in your home complete.
Carpets belong in the home because they are soft, warm, and cozy. They are like the perfect pair of shoes to offset a fabulous outfit. Without them, the style wouldn’t look the same; it wouldn’t have the same pop. There’s no doubt they can complete a room when used correctly. In fact, rugs can even draw the focus away from the rest of the room sometimes; they are that impressive.
As with all things interior design, getting them to work isn’t straightforward as a balance is hard to find. The good news is the tricks of the trade are underneath for you to use in your home. Hopefully, the following won’t floor you!

How to Choose a Rug
Below I’m going to cover some of the most common questions when trying to decide on what type of rug to choose.
You’ll want to consider the rug material when choosing a rug. The amount of foot traffic it’ll get should be one of the biggest things to consider.
If you’re wanting to add a rug to a busy area like an entryway or hallway you might want to consider a rug made of jute or sisal. They are quite durable and long-lasting.
Using wool or a wool-blend rug are a great choice if you’re needing a rug that’s easy to clean or stain resistant.
Shaggy rugs are a great option for quieter less traffic areas.
Choose a Rug Color
Next, you’ll want to figure out the color of your rug. What is the color pallet of the room you’re looking to add the rug? The rug you choose can be considered as a work of art for the floor. There are so many amazing options to choose from.
If your style is more minimal you might want to go with a less busy option. If you’re looking for a statement piece then you might want to choose a rug with more going on with it.
Choosing the “right” size of the rug can be overwhelming. You don’t want to choose a rug that is too small or too big for the space. It is important to measure the area to get an idea of what size rug you should choose.
When I’m deciding on the size rug I like to take some blue painters tape and tape off the area that would be filled by the rug so I can see where it will lay in the room. I will also see how it will fit with all of the furniture. This way when I receive the rug, I know it’ll fit perfectly in the room.
Main Seating Area
When deciding on the style of rug you’ll want to consider the main seating area. If your main seating area is a square you might want to look at square rugs. Also, if your seating area is a rectangle then choosing a rectangle rug will be a better option for you.
Who uses the room
This will go along the lines of traffic. If you eat in the room or have kids that might spill drinks or food choosing a rug that can be cleaned easily will be an option.
Will you need a rug pad?
If your home has hardwood floors then having a rug pad is a must this will help make walking more comfortable. It also provides a bit of insulation and reduces slippage.
Having a rug pad will also extend the life of your carpet.
Make sure to read the labels of the rug pad to make sure it’s safe for different floors.
Choosing the right rug for you
Ultimately you know what will work best for you and your home. Do a little research before choosing a rug is important. Read reviews, do your measuring, and tape off the area are the most important steps when you choose a rug.
