Not everyone has them. They can be both a blessing and a curse. You can let your back garden overgrow a little. It can stand to be neglected. Do that with your front garden and everyone can see it. If you live in a neighborhood where people take care of their front gardens this can be a problem. Maintaining two gardens doesn’t have to be double the work. There are things you can do to mitigate it while still keeping it looking fresh. There are likely things you can do that you hadn’t even thought of, so although the tips below are by no means all-encompassing they can help you think about your front garden in the right way.
Freshen Up The Border
If you have a fence or gate this is a good time to get the paint out. A fresh lick of paint can do wonders for the overall aesthetic. Make sure you get the correct wood or metal paint and you won’t have to do it again for a long time either, depending on what kind of weather you get. It won’t take too long, and metal fences and gates are fairly easy to maintain. If you don’t have a border, this is where you could think about getting one.
They add a splash of color and stay that way all year round. Depending on the size of your garden, think about planting a tree at its center. Sure, it may be tempting to go for the prettier blossom tree but they shed their leaves and leave a huge mess. With most evergreens the maintenance is minimal and it can lend a splash of character to your garden. If you want more color, think about planting different flowers that bloom at separate times of the year. Then there will always be a splash of color in your garden.
Don’t Forget Your Home
From the front garden, and the street beyond you can likely see your home. You can make it all look a bit more appealing by replacing or painting your guttering system. Window frames can use some TLC too from time to time. Look at the pointing between the masonry, it can crumble away. If your home is made of timber, getting a fresh paint job is probably the best chance you have at increasing your home’s curb appeal.
Maintaining isn’t easy if you’ve got a hectic life. It could be work, kids or both. Think about hiring a gardener to maintain your front lawn and any trees. It can be cheaper than you think, it just takes some shopping around. If you don’t know what to do with your garden, then you can consider a landscape gardener. They can give you ideas about what to do with your garden in its entirety. Just be clear from the outset that you want a minimal maintenance garden. If you’ve got the time to invest then go for some of the more exotic designs and suggestions.
