Learn how to make a fake tree in this tutorial. Fake and real indoor trees can be very expensive. Save money and get the tree you want by making your own. You’ll need a handful of supplies and a bit of time to make this budget-friendly fake tree for indoors.
I really wanted a tree for my entryway. Our entryway doesn’t get much sunlight so I knew I needed a fake tree. When I went shopping online for a tree I was shocked by the prices!
I was not spending $200 or more for a fake tree so I decided to make my own!

How to make a fake tree
It doesn’t matter what type of fake tree you want the steps are the same. In just a short amount of time, you’ll be enjoying your own fake tree.
Most of the supplies I had on hand. The only things I didn’t have on hand were the trunk and the greenery. I did find a branch on the sidewalk that I used as the trunk (the looks I got were priceless!).

Fake Tree Supplies
- Tree branch (I recommend finding a fallen branch)
- The greenery of choice (I used olive tree branches and purchased 2)
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue (I recommend gorilla hot glue)
- 1/8″ drill bit
- Wire cutters
- Garden sheers
- Basket or planter
- Floral foam
- Craft paper
Like I mentioned before I had everything on hand except for the branch and the greenery. So this project cost me under $60. You can definitely spend less however, I did go for the more expensive greenery because it looked nicer.
How to make a fake tree tutorial
I’ve put together a quick video tutorial for you so you can make your own fake tree at home.
Step 1: Prep the branch
Since I did scavenge this branch there was pollen, moss, and other stuff on the branch. I wiped down the branch and then took a bit of sandpaper to it. This removed some of the moss and pollen.
I didn’t remove it all because I felt it made this tree look more real.
Step 2: Prep the greenery
Once your branch is ready to go, it’s time to prep the greenery. Your stems will probably come in bunches. Take your wire cutters and separate the stems. This will make it easier for you to place the greenery around your tree.
Step 3: Plan greenery placement
Next, you’ll want to plan out where you’ll be attaching the greenery to the branches.
Depending on the type of tree you’ll be creating will determine your placement. You’ll mainly want to focus on placing the greenery towards the top.
Step 4: Drill holes
To attach the greenery stems to your fake tree you’ll need to drill holes in the branch. For this step I used an 1/8″ drill bit. This was the same size as the stems I was using.
Step 5: Attach stems to tree
When you’ve drilled a few holes add a bit of hot glue to the hole and then attach a stem to the tree.
You’ll be repeating steps 4 and 5 until you achieve your desired look.
Step 6: Add a basket or pot!
Once you’ve achieved your desired look it’s time to add your tree to a basket or a pot depending on the look you’re going for.
Fill the bottom with a few rocks to weigh down the basket or pot. This will help your tree from tipping because the greenery can cause your tree to be top-heavy.
Next, I added a bit of craft paper and floral foam to hold the tree in place.
Finally, I added a bit of moss (I picked from my yard) to place on top to hide the floral foam and craft paper. I added a bit of hot glue to attach the moss.
Step 7: Find the perfect spot for your fake tree!
Now that your fake tree is complete it’s time to find the perfect spot in your home so you can enjoy you newest DIY project.
