I want to let you in on a little secret. My garage is the one place in my home that gets neglected. We store all of our extra things in there that it started busting at the seams.
I’m going to show you how I went from a cluttered and unorganized garage to a fully functional and organized garage that houses our cars and so much more.

How to Organize Your Garage
Having an organized garage doesn’t happen overnight. It does take a bit of time and planning. Below are the exact steps I took from having a garage with no extra space to a clean and organized garage.
Set aside time
First thing first is making sure that you set aside enough time to organize your garage. For me, I do a little at a time so I’m not getting overwhelmed or burned out part way through.
When you start organizing your garage you want to start with sorting. Whenever I start decluttering sorting is the first thing I do. Create 3 piles:
This might end up looking more dirty as you go but setting up sorting stations will allow you to do as much as you have energy for.
When you finish up organizing for the day. Toss all of the garbage you have in that pile and bag up your donation items.
If possible put the keep items away. If that’s not possible you can put this off until the end.
The best way to not only organize your garage but keep it organized is to create stations. In our garage we have many station here are a few examples:
- Seasonal decor
As I was going through our garage I made sure that we had space for items that are stored in the garage and are used.
Add shelves or cabinets
Adding shelves and/or cabinets is key to storing items in your garage. Using vertical storage is really important in our area as we do get a lot of rain and our garage can get water inside.
I tend to keep anything that can get damaged by water off the ground and use plastic containers that are water resistant.
We installed some really sturdy shelves I found this tutorial from Ana White and I love how they turned out. I also have some wire shelves that we use throughout our garage too.
The best way to keep your garage organized is to make sure everything is labeled. This way you can easily locate the items in any box or container you are using to store your items.

Supplies to organize your garage
When you’re creating different stations having shelves and containers are key. Here are a few other supplies you can consider for you to stay organized:
Shelving and lighting
Adding some shelves and lighting will do a lot to getting your garage organized. Setting up zone or stations and making sure that you are only storing items that you’re going to use. Throw garbage away and donate items as soon as you know you’re not going to use them again will go a long way in keeping your garage organized.
