Needing tips on the best way to organize a garage? Look no further than these simple ideas that anyone can do!
How to Organize a Garage
Finding ways to organize a garage shouldn’t be hard. Do you feel as though you are you afraid to open your garage door? Could you even fit your car in your garage if you had to? For many homes, the garage becomes a dump-all area. It’s where old furniture, toys, and fitness equipment goes to die. What if you could actually use your garage? Wish and hope that you could start fresh? Think of all the possibilities for your garage, if you could actually use it as a garage!
Determine Your Vision for the Space
First things first. Decide what you want to do with your garage. Are you wanting to park your car in there? Do you want to turn it into a gym, workshop, or a place for your husband to hang out? (or even you for that matter!) You need to have an idea of what you want to do with the space before you get started. This will help you determine what you need to do first when planning how you want to organize.
Empty the Garage
In all honesty…when it comes to organizing a garage, this is the hard part. You need to empty everything from your garage. EVERYTHING. There are many ways to tackle this. Some cities even have companies that will empty the space for free! The only thing is they get to keep whatever they find. (and if you’re getting rid of it anyway, is that even that big of a deal?) If you know that everything in your garage is items you no longer want, this is a great thing to do.
If you have a mixture of items you want and don’t want, you’ll need to do it on your own. The items you no longer want can be donated or sold. Some thrift stores will come and pick up large donations or you can always list it for free online via varying Internet outlets and sources as well.

Clean the Garage
Once everything is cleared out of the garage, it’s time to tackle the area in more detail. Pressure wash the flooring and wiping down the walls are just a few of the fun cleaning tasks you’ll need to do. You may even want to apply a fresh coat of paint to give the area a new look.
To add organization to your garage, you will need to install shelving. Shelving allows you to utilize the upper areas of your garage that you previously weren’t using. This is great for storing holiday decorations and other items you only use once a year. Even if you plan to use the area as a workshop or gym, you can still store items as well (as long as it’s not clutter).
Create a Space for Everything
The key to organization is having a place for everything that you NEED. The place you choose needs to make sense. If you’re turning the space into a workshop, you could easily install a pegboard above the workbench to hold tools. That way, it’s the best of both worlds. In the same thought process, if you were turning the space into a gym, you would need to have a place for hand weights, your yoga mat, etc.
Setup Work Areas
If you plan to use the space for more than one purpose, set up different areas. The idea of having different areas helps ensure that things stay organized. Your tools will stay in the workshop area and your hand weights will stay in the workout area. Think of your garage as one great room and set it up accordingly. Once you have a plan, it’s honestly amazing at just how much space your garage truly has!
A garage doesn’t have to be a mess. You can organize a garage in one weekend if you work really hard. (grab some friends and family to help!) Don’t forget there are ways to get rid of the items in your garage quickly, which will make the process much easier. If you can donate items that you no longer want, that’s a great way to save them from adding to the landfill!
