Paperwork is one of the hardest things to organize. Many people tell you to gather it and wait until the end of your project to tackle it. The biggest problem though is that paper keeps coming into your home in the form of mail. While many things are now delivered through email, you still probably get mail every day. To help keep your home from becoming overrun with paper, you need to organize your mail. Let’s take a closer look at how to organize mail at home.

How to organize mail at home
Before I share the tips to organize your mail at home I’d like to help you further by giving you a free checklist. The Organize Your Mail Checklist will help you take these tips with you so you can organize your mail at home with ease.
Create a Drop Zone for Your Mail
If you want to organize mail at home, you need a drop zone. This is an area where you will go through your mail when you bring it in each day. Because you may not have to open everything immediately, the drop zone will allow you to organize mail so that you can go through it later and weed out anything that’s junk or needs to be shredded. Building a Beautiful Command Center is an easy way to create a Drop Zone.

Choose Folders That Make Sense for You
You want folders that make sense to you and your household. For example, if it’s just you and your spouse, you may have household folders that are for bills, items that need immediate attention, and things that need to be filed. If you live with friends, you might have folders for each person in the home. Again, choose folders that make sense to you.
Have a Recycling Bin for Junk Mail
When you organize mail at home, you’ll be dealing with a lot of junk mail. It’s great to have a trash can devoted to recycling. This way you can quickly toss unwanted mail into the bin. This will prevent junk mail from piling up in your home.
Place a Shredder Nearby
Another great addition to your drop zone is a shredder. We all get mail that we do not want others to have access to. Run your personal mail through the shredder and you can then empty the shredded into your recycling bin. You never want to simply place your credit card offers or any mail that has information that could be used for identity theft, into the recycling bin before shredding.
Go Through Folders Regularly
Last, but not least, make sure to go through your folders on a regular basis. For example, if you have a file for items that need to be filed, go through and file the items away once a month. This will prevent the area from becoming cluttered.
When you take the time to organize mail at home, you’ll find that you have less paperwork cluttering your home. The reason mail becomes paperwork clutter is that many times we bring it in the house and don’t think about it again. This leads to a huge pile of paperwork that seems overwhelming to deal with. Taking a bit of time to create a drop zone for your mail is one small organizing task that can make a big difference in your home.
