Terracotta pots are very inexpensive however they’re bland. I’ve been buying indoor plants and needed planters to put them in. I came up with a plan to paint these terracotta planters but with a twist.
In this post, I’m going to show you how I went about painting terracotta pots plus how I added a little twine to them to give them a farmhouse feel. Since I’m updating my home to a modern farmhouse feel I thought this would be a perfect project to add to my bathroom and laundry room.
How To Paint Terracotta Pots With A Twist
I see so many beautifully painted clay pots all over Pinterest and I’m far from being artistically inclined. The thought of painting or drawing something makes me feel very like it’ll turn out so horrible. I usually will spend way too much on something that already looks good so I don’t waste my time, money, or energy on something that I know I’ll hate in the end.
Terracotta pots painting ideas
Since I had all of these terracotta flower pots collecting dust and taking up space in my garden shed I knew it was time to find something to do with them. So I got some inspiration from Google and came up with a plan that I knew I could be happy with.
There wasn’t going to be any difficult painting to do or any real artistic talent to use to create the terracotta pot idea I came up with.
Crafts with flower pots
The great thing is it doesn’t take many supplies and I was able to make this in a day (including dry time).
Updating our home has been a slow process but it’s coming together. I started in the bathroom and was in desperate need of some accessories. I want our bathroom to feel bright and clean so I thought adding a few plants to the room would do the trick.
Since I had all of the supplies to make this, this project turned into a no spend DIY project. Since this rarely happens I was so excited to get started painting my terracotta pots.
How to Paint Terracotta Pots
Painting terracotta pots don’t take any special equipment. For this project, I used common supplies that I already had around the house.
If you do want your terracotta pots to be outside I do recommend that you seal them with a clear waterproof sealant so you don’t worry about the twine coming off.
If you’d like to see me paint this terracotta pot I did create a video that is located at the end of this post.
Supplies you’ll need for painting terracotta pots:
- Terracotta Pot
- White craft paint
- White craft glue
- Foam brushes
- Twine (any color you want)
- A plant to put inside
- Cardboard to protect your table
The steps you’ll take for painting your terracotta pots:
You’ll start off by collecting your supplies and then painting the terracotta pot with a coat of paint. Allow the paint to dry completely and then add another coat of paint. I added 2 coats of white paint to this pot.
Once the paint is completely dry
It’s time to add the twine. I used some craft glue but you can use common white school glue for this (I ran out…). Add a good amount to the pot itself before you start adding the twine.
I painted the terracotta pot with some craft glue before I added the twine.
Wrap the twine around the top band of the terracotta pot. Keep adding glue so the twine is saturated with glue. The is a sticky process but you need to have enough glue on the twine so this will work.
Keep going pressing the twine together so you don’t have any gaps. You’ll want to repeat this process until you have 2 layers of twine on your painted terracotta pot.
Allow this to dry completely. I set it aside to dry overnight so I knew that the twine was going to be completely dry.
If you want your terracotta pot to be weatherproof…
If you want your terracotta pot to be weatherproof, once the terracotta pot has dried completely then you can add a coat of clear weather sealant to your newly decorated pot.
Make sure you do this process if your pot is going to be outside. The craft glue will not hold up to the weather.
Now that everything has dried completely you’re ready to add your plant to your painted terracotta pot.
I’ve put together a short video showing you how I painted this terracotta pot plus all of the steps until the end.

Are you ready to make this yourself? If you have one or five terracotta pots laying around your home you can create this awesome transformation too.
I was really happy with the end result. This terracotta pot looks so great in my bathroom and laundry room. By adding the twine I felt like it had a rustic farmhouse feel.
Having all of the supplies at home made this a no-cost project, however, if you don’t have the supplies at home this terracotta pot project shouldn’t cost more than $7. Which means this is a very inexpensive home decor project.

What I loved about this simple project is that it turned out perfectly. I was able to complete this in a short amount of time and it was so simple.
However, you can easily change it up and decorate it any way that you want as well. All you need is the pot to get started.
You can then add funky paint colors, cool textures, or even just fill them with something unique and have it sitting on your shelf!
I would love to know if this would be something that you’d make to spruce up a room in your home. Also, would you make any changes? Let me know in the comments below.
