The laundry room can be a rather dull part of the home, often filled with laundry baskets, cleaning supplies, dirty laundry and a large lifeless washer/dryer.
Your time spent here doing laundry can seem just as much of a drag as the décor of this room. Thus, no one would blame you for wanting to get your laundry chore done and getting out of this space as soon as possible.
However, there is nothing stopping you from adding some décor to your laundry room space. Moreover, one way to make a start is with a DIY laundry room wall hanging. This wall hanging for your laundry room is easy to replicate, breaks the monotony of the laundry room space, and adds some aesthetics to this indispensable room within your home.
Do It Yourself
All over Pinterest and Instagram, you see these amazing rooms beautifully decorated and darn it, I’m determined to achieve it.
If you’ve been following along with my home updating spree you know that I’m inspired (or more like obsessed) with the farmhouse look. I love the look of wood and simple lines.
It’s important that all of the projects are simple and something that I can do by myself also. I want to show anyone that they can do this themselves. All you need is a little inspiration and direction.
Now that I’ve built the roller cart and wall cabinet it was time to give this room a little personality. I did build a laundry sign but I felt that the room wasn’t complete yet, so I made this sign for the other wall.
Here is a step by step tutorial for DIY laundry room décor that can bring the much-desired change in your otherwise dull and monotonous laundry room.
Listed below are all the items needed for this DIY laundry room wall hanging project.
- The free printable (to be downloaded)
- 1/4″ rope
- Sander (or just sandpaper)
- Miter saw (or a hand saw)
- 1/2″ drill bit
- Hook to hang the wall décor
- Safety ear and eye protection
Step by Step Tutorial
What follows is a step by step tutorial for replicating a rustic and charming laundry room wall hanging. There is definitely room to explore, so feel free to use different color paints and different fonts for this wall hanging. Additionally, you could also use the given printable to simply replicate the wall hanging according to the tutorial.
Drill holes into the corners of the boards bearing in mind that 2 of these boards will have 4 holes while 1 will just have 2.
Make sure the holes are drilled in a uniform manner on all 3 boards.
Once you have cut your boards to size and have drilled the necessary holes; sandpaper the boards to iron out rough edges and give it smooth matte finish.
Use any stain of your choice to stain the boards. Allow them to drain and dry before you move on to the next step.
While wood staining is easy, drying can be a long process and the boards are best left to dry for 2 hours or overnight.
Once your boards are dry, you can go about transferring the words ‘Wash, Dry, Repeat’ on to the boards. For this, you need the download printable below.
Use chalk to trace the words on the back of each page and allow the chalk imprints to transfer onto the board.
Using a paintbrush, paint the words for real on the boards; chalk prints will help you fill in the color.
Allow the boards to dry and then sandpaper the boards lightly to give them a worn out look.
If you want new and shiny, bypass this sandpaper step.
All that left to do is to assemble the sign. Do this by using scissors to cut the rope into 5 16” pieces.
For the first board, string the rope into the top two holes and tie a simple knot at each end.
Use the strings to connect each board with the next with an emphasis on keeping the words in order.
Once you are done, your laundry room wall hanging or signboard is done and all you need to do is hang it up on a prominent spot in your laundry room.
Many folks wonder why DIY instead of just purchasing a sign or wall hanging. The obvious reason is getting a laundry room wall hanging with the exact same words is quite difficult unless its custom made which can be expensive. Additionally; it is quite rare to find laundry room appropriate signs and wall hangings. The home décor section of your local store just doesn’t have them. Last but not the least; this is a fun and productive way to spend your leisure time.
If you need even more reasons to try this DIY project, they are as follows:
- Your laundry room needs sprucing up
- Unless you intend to sit and watch paint dry; this project takes no more than 4 hours to complete.
- All materials needed are easily available.
- This laundry room sign or wall hanging is a great reminder for kids and the hubby who are new to laundry rules.
So will you be trying this? This is really a very simple project that gives your laundry room a rustic and homey feeling all in one. Let me know in the comments below if this is something that you’d try! I love to hear how it turns out. Thank you so much for stopping by. Have an amazing day.
