Getting the house clean can feel like an uphill battle. If you have big dreams for what you want your house to look like you might get overwhelmed before you’re able to see a transformation.
That’s why I think it’s important to create a plan that won’t take too much time and won’t feel like the only thing you’re doing is cleaning and cleaning up after people also known as the housemaid…
If you haven’t checked out my daily and weekly cleaning posts, I’ve linked them below for you so you can have a full understanding of what needs to be cleaned when.
Monthly household chores
Monthly household chores are chores that only need to be done once a month to keep up. Things like dusting light fixtures and cleaning vents only need to be done once a month.
Setting up your monthly cleaning schedule
The easiest way to set up your monthly cleaning schedule is to add a chore or 2 to your weekly cleaning session.
Typically we clean each day so adding another day of cleaning is just impossible.

Your cleaning schedule should include:
- Vacuum vents and woodwork
- Clean the dishwasher
- Dust and clean light fixtures
- Clean washing machine
- Dust blinds
- Vacuum out the dryer vent
- Vacuum
under and around furniture
The list isn’t too long and is completely manageable.
Monthly cleaning tips
Monthly cleaning vacuum vents and woodwork
Once a month when you are doing your weekly vacuuming, add vacuuming the vents and woodwork to your list. This will help remove some dust in the air.
If you take care of this each month it won’t take much time since the dust and dirt didn’t have time to accumulate.
Monthly cleaning- the dishwasher
It is important for your dishes and the lifespan of your dishwasher to do this. What you’ll want to do is clean the filter. Then run the dishwasher on the pots and pans cycle.
Doing this doesn’t take much time with your monthly cleaning schedule. This will keep your dishwasher working and make your dishes come out clean almost everytime.
Monthly cleaning the light fixtures
Each month you’ll want to dust and clean the light fixtures. I like to remove the glass part and wash them. Then I dust the light fixture making sure that there aren’t any cobwebs or additional dust.
Monthly cleaning the washing machine
The washing machine should be cleaned each month. I have a front loading washer. The steps to take to clean your front loading washer are:
- wipe out the front gasket
- clean the door
- clean out the filter
- run the washer with vinegar on the regular cycle with hot water
This doesn’t take too much time to complete and you’re ensuring your clothes will come out clean and smelling fresh.
Clean the blinds
When was the last time you cleaned your blinds? This was a chore I forgot to do and it got so bad that I needed to clean my blinds in the tub.
Now each month I use this handy tool to quickly dust the blinds. This 3-prong blind duster is a lifesaver and I’m able to clean the blinds in just a few minutes.
Monthly cleaning dryer vent
When the dryer vent is clear of lint your dryer will dry your clothes faster. Once a month I clean out the dryer vent with the vacuum and then I wipe out the dryer just to make sure everything is nice and clean.
This whole job takes me about 3 minutes to complete.
Monthly cleaning under and around furniture
The final monthly cleaning chore is vacuuming under and around furniture. This is something that goes pretty quick if you are a regular vacuumer.
During your weekly vacuuming, you can take the time to move some furniture around and get to the areas that are blocked by the furniture. You’ll be surprised what you’ll find under and around your furniture.
Simple ways to complete your monthly cleaning
By adding a few of these chores to your daily or weekly cleaning schedule you’ll be able to know that your house is staying clean. However, these are chores that don’t get done very often and you might forget.
I created a free checklist that has this complete list for you. You can download the free monthly cleaning checklist below.
Hopefully, this article was helpful for you to follow and you’ll be adding these monthly cleaning chores to your cleaning list.
