Organize Christmas decorations
By organizing your Christmas decorations before you put them away you’ll be saving time and money in the long run. Organizing your Christmas decorations will:
- Protect fragile items
- Toss broken or unused items
- Create a “home” for all of your decor
How to pack and organize Christmas decorations for next year
Before you start putting everything away, there are a few steps to take in order to make sure that you can keep your holiday decorations organized.
Gather all the decorations into 1 spot
Now that the holidays are over, it’s time to put everything away. First, it’s time to move all of the indoor decor into one spot. Make sure that you’re grabbing the items that are left in the holiday bins or boxes.
It might look like an unorganized mess but this is important to have everything out now so you know what you have and what you use.
Organize Christmas decorations by purging
It is time to go through and purge all of the decorations. If you don’t know where to start, start with some of the items that you didn’t use this year.
Go through the items and decide:
- Will you use it again
- Is it broken
- Does it match what you’re going for
If you answer no to any of them, toss it. There is no need to hold onto items that are just taking up space in storage.
Sort your Christmas decorations
Now that you’ve purged until you cannot purge any longer it’s time to start organizing. The best way to start is sorting your Christmas decorations by grouping like items together.
For example have an ornament section, ribbon section, and so on until you have all of the items sorted.

Store the decorations
Once all of your holiday decor has been sorted and everything is grouped together it’s time to start storing your items.
I love organizing with clear plastic bins because you’re able to see what you have stored by looking at the bin. I also take 1 more step and attach a label to the bin and write out everything that’s in there.
Then there’s no question at all about what is stored inside the bin. This step will save you time next Christmas when you are decorating for Christmas.
Label the Christmas decorations
Since you went to all of the trouble of organizing your Christmas decorations, it’s best to take the next step and label the holiday decorations.
I use a printable that I designed. I write everything that’s in the bin on the label and tuck it inside. Since the storage tubs I use are clear I’m able to keep the label away from moisture and the elements. This way when I go looking for the holiday decor bins I can tell exactly what the label says.

A few other ways to organize Christmas decorations
The above tips are great for general Christmas decor however, there may be a few other items that you’ll want to take a little extra time organizing and caring for before you store your holiday decorations for the year.
Organize Christmas lights
Christmas lights seem to tangle so easily. It seems that you spend more time untangling them then you are stringing them through the tree.
There are a few ways you can organize your Christmas lights.
With all of the extra cardboard laying around after the holidays this may seem like a win-win. Cut a piece of cardboard to 12″ x 6″ then wrap the strand around the cardboard. Store the lights in a storage bin and you’re done.
Christmas light reels
I purchased this light reel kit about 5 or 6 years ago and I’m so glad I did. It comes with its own storage tote and reels.
This light reel allows you to string multiple strands on one reel freeing up space and keeping your lights nicely organized. If you have a few dollars to spend and want a permanent organizing solution for your Christmas lights, the Christmas light reel kit is a life saver.
Organize Christmas Decorations that are fragile
The last thing you want to find when you are ready to decorate for Christmas are broken fragile items. That’s why it’s important to take the necessary steps to protect your fragile decorations.
A few things you can do to protect your fragile items are:
- wrapping the items individually
- using separators in the plastic bins
- try using egg cartons
The idea is to use what you already have to organize Christmas decorations and being careful at the same time.
