I’m so excited to be sharing our family room tour. This family room makeover has been an ongoing project for, it feels like, forever. I’m done and ready to share the family room makeover before and after photos with you. You can also enjoy the video room tour too!
This family room makeover was done on a budget. Most everything you’ll see here I made myself. I’ll make sure to link to each project so you can make this on your own too.
Family Room Tour
Here’s the before…
As you can see the room needed a lot of work. There were 2 old recliners that were falling apart and an IKEA couch. We had stained carpets.
It was like I had a blank canvas to work with! You can read the step by step tour or watch to video tour below! Enjoy
Before the decorating even started we replaced the flooring throughout our entire house. As you can see from the photos, the carpet was WAY past its prime. We chose a seasoned look that gave multi-dimensions, colors, and a “lived in” feel.

Family room coffee table
I made this coffee table a while ago and needed to dress it up. I added a table runner that I bought a Target years ago. Over the table runner, I added a wooden tray that I bought unfinished at Michaels (years ago…). I just gave it a chippy look.
Over top I added my big splurge these custom candle handles. When I say splurge, they were $15 a piece. The candles on top were ones we had on hand.
If you follow me on Instagram you may know that I’m a plant lover. I added a few indoor plants, and a homemade candle. Also, you can’t go wrong with fresh cut flowers from the yard.
Family room wall decor
The wall behind the small couch was all very inexpensive and most items I had on hand. I think I spend all of $10 on everything on the wall! The mirror wall hangs were a complete knock off from my friend Julie from The Design Twins. I love the shutters she has in her bedroom.
Then, I took old wood from my garden overhaul and made the photo hanger ladder thing (I really don’t know what to call it haha). I added some magnolia greenery for a layered look.
I added some family photos in some wooden frames that I had on hand (from Michael’s). Finally, I added some hooks to hang them.
Behind the couch
Then I took some items from around the house to decorate the table behind the couch. I went into detail and showed you how I made everything for that table in a video.
The small wall
Finally, there was the small wall that had me stumped the entire time we’ve lived here. I added a garbage and recycle cabinet. Over the top, I added a table runner, a few candles, flowers, and a couple of books from my idols Martha and JoAnna.
Thank you so much for walking along on my family room tour and makeover. I’m thrilled how this all turned out.
