Over the toilet space saver
If you are living in an old home where there is a shortage of bathroom storage space and are seriously considering to change the look to sync with the present age, you can turn it into a modern bathroom that has sufficient organized space for toilet paper, hand towels, painting terracotta posts, and other bathroom basics. If you want a bright and farmhouse look, paint the walls in light colors such as white and install white trims all along with the windows and floors. Since it is a bathroom with small floor space, creating a shelf on the floor is impossible. You need something that could be hung, over the toilet ladder shelf is the solution here.
Making furniture is not a difficult job. With a bit of planning and direction, you will be able to create bathroom storage without having to spend much money. If you are in need of toilet shelf for your small bathroom, here is a list of supplies along with the instructions to make it.
Start making over the toilet ladder shelf!
Here are the supplies list for 2 shelves and a towel rack. The dimensions would be 23″ wide and 26″ long, just perfect for a small bathroom!
Tools you will require:
- Miter saw (you can also use a hand saw)
- Ear and eye protection
- Wood glue
- Drill (with a countersink bit and a ¾” drill bit)
- Sander with 80 grit paper
- Poly stain
- 2″ wood screws
- Wood filler
- Gloves
- Paintbrush
- Self-drilling drywall anchor screws
- Face Mask (for sanding and staining)
Cut list:
- 1×8 @ 20″
- 2-1×3 @ 8″
- 1×6 @ 20″
- 2-1×3 @ 20 “
- 2-1×3 @ 26″
- 1×3 @ 21.5″
- 2-1×3 @ 6″
- 3/4″ dowel @ 24″
The first thing you need to do is measure and cut all the pieces. If you have stain, glue, filler or any other items mentioned above, the project will not cost you more than $15. However, if you are purchasing all the items, it is still an inexpensive project.
Building the over the toilet shelf
- Once the pieces are cut to the above-said measures, start assembling the shelves. Use the 1*3 and 1*6 ones to make a ledge for the toilet shelf. You do not want things falling off the sides, affix the cupboard to the wall. However, make sure you drill holes before actually starting to assemble to avoid splitting of wood.
- Add wood glue before attaching the piece to make it a strong fit.
- Take the 1*3 cut piece and add it to the top for support.
- Then identify how far apart the shelves need to be, do some measuring and you will come to know!
- Create an angle at the ends and attach these shelves to the sides.
- Add the dowel(1*3) to the bottom.
- Once you are done with assembling, start filling the screw holes. Use wood filler for the purpose. It goes pink but ends with a natural wood color when dry. It takes roughly 2 hours to dry completely.
- Now, sand the toilet shelf. This removes the uneven areas, splinters, and wood filler if it is in excess. It leaves your over the toilet shelf smooth.
- Remove the dust with a sponge before you stain the shelf. Use a paintbrush for staining and allow it to dry for the night.
- Install the toilet shelf and store your towels, toilet paper, and other bathroom essentials. You can even place a houseplant to freshen up the bathroom.
This project will need a maximum of 2 days to complete. You can change the stain as per your taste and make the shelves longer or shorter depending upon the space you have.

You made that look so easy. But this is a great idea to take home for the Hubs to tackle! It looked great!
Great details and directions, I can’t wait to try this out next weekend!
I love this! I really wish that we could add it to our master bathroom. Unfortunately, our toilet in our master bath is nestled really close to our tub and I’m afraid it would narrow the space too much. It may work in the guest bath though…
I really like this and I love how you painted it. I’m loving the distressed look. I hope it never goes out of style. It also doesn’t look too terribly hard.
This is so cute! We are transitioning our decor to be more ‘farmhouse’ and I think this will fit perfectly!

That is sooo cute! We live in our old house and storage is not ample. I could totally use a little bit more room to store things (couldn’t we all??).

That’s wonderful!
