Judging A House By Its Cover - How To Improve Your Exteriors

We all know that we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but we all do right?! I know that I’m certainly guilty of that! But it’s not just books that we are quick to judge just on first appearances. I’m sure that the majority of us are also guilty of being quick to come to a snap opinion of houses just from their exteriors. No matter how nice and stylish they are inside, it doesn’t matter when you are just passing and have the exteriors to go off - if you can only see the outside of a house then that is what you are going to judge it on.

So, it’s worth taking a look at your own home’s exteriors. That way, you can get an idea of how passersby might be judging your home. You might even notice some parts that are in obvious need of an update or renovating. If you are planning on putting your home on the property market any time soon, it’s a good idea to get all of these jobs done sooner rather than later so that you can boost your home's curb appeal. But even if you aren’t planning on moving, it’s still nice to get the exteriors looking good.

Not sure how to improve your property’s exteriors? Here are some great ideas.

See To The Front Garden

One of the quickest ways to update your home’s exteriors is to just do a spot of gardening in the front garden. You might be amazed that simply getting rid of all the weeds and tidying it up a bit can help your outside areas look a lot smarter and cleaner. If you don’t have the time to tend a front garden, there are a few ways you can make it a lot less maintenance. For instance, if your front garden is just a lawn and you are sick of mowing it every week, you might want to turn it into a driveway. All you will need to do is remove the lawn and pave over it. You might be surprised to learn just how much value is added to your property after adding an onsite parking facility! If you don’t have quite enough space to make a private driveway, you could always simply replace the lawn with a pretty rockery.

Clean Out The Gutters

This might not be the most pleasant of jobs but it can certainly make a big difference to your home’s exteriors. If you really don’t fancy cleaning your gutters, you should be able to find a local handyman who will be able to take care of it for you. But it isn’t too difficult a task and, as long as you have a head for heights, you should find that cleaning out the gutters yourself is quite easy to do. There are a few benefits that will come with cleaning out the gutters. Firstly, you can get all the rubbish out of them so that it doesn’t overflow and make your property’s exteriors look very dirty. But it also helps prevent any blockages that could prevent water from flowing through the gutters. If blockages do occur, then water could end up overflowing down your home’s exterior walls. Not only will this look very dirty, but it could also cause some water damage which could weaken the building’s structure.

Smarten Up The Path

How is the path that leads up to your front door looking? This is something that homeowners regularly neglect and forget about. If you do forget about it, it could quickly become messy and might even end up overgrown in weeds. If it is a paved path, you might find that some of the paving stones or slabs end up coming loose over time, which could cause a hazard as well as making it look slightly messy. So, it’s a good idea to take some time to smarten up this path. If you do see any weeds peeking through, it’s a good idea to pull them up and sprinkle some weed killer on the path so that they don’t return. You should also maintain the path and ensure that it is all secure and no one is at risk of tripping over any loose parts.

Don’t Forget The Back Of The House

When most people work on the exteriors of their home, they only concentrate on the property’s front wall as this is the one that faces the street and will be seen by passersby. However, it is also necessary to work on the back of the wall as well. You never know who might be able to see this side of your home! All of the homeowners who live behind your house certainly will! Adding decorative features such as Front Doors and a terrace to the exterior wall on the back of your home will help make it look a bit more ornate. It’s also worth checking any of the paintwork or woodwork that features on this wall. If you haven’t maintained this wall in quite some time, you might need to touch up the paintwork or replace the woodwork.

Add Some Security Lighting

Even though extra lighting on the exterior wall won’t add anything to your home’s aesthetics, it can still serve a very practical purpose. For instance, if you add a light near both your front and back doors that detects movement, this can attract attention if a potential burglar or intruder were to approach your house. This can act as a great deterrent. Similarly, all of this exterior lighting can also make the approach to your home a lot safer in the evenings. Some people like to place small outdoor lamps along their front path so that they can see the way whenever they get home in the dark. This way, they greatly reduce the risk of tripping up as they walk up to the front door.

As you can see then, there are so many great ways to improve all your home’s exteriors!
