We can all be forgetful at times, but sometimes there are things that slip our mind for a lot longer than they should. This is especially the case when we are so busy with our work and family. In fact, even if you do remember to do little jobs, you might not be too inclined to do them if you are super busy – you might not be able to fit them into your schedule, or you may simply be too tired to see to them!
Unfortunately, one set of jobs that can often be forgotten are all those maintenance jobs that need to be done on an infrequent basis. You know, the things that you need to do just once a year. As they don’t feature so much in our schedule, it can be very easy to forget about them. Over time, though, if you do neglect these tasks for too long, you will start to notice some big problems develop in your property.
So, which jobs should you try to remember, no matter how busy you may be? Here are some of the most important home maintenance tasks.
Checking Air Ducts And Filters
Do you remember when the last time you checked your property’s air ducts and filters were? I’m sure that the majority of you won’t be able to remember – in fact, you might have never checked them before! Ideally, you need to check the filter on your heating system once a year as the whole system can become quite inefficient if the filter starts to clog up. It could be worth checking it every other week through the winter months when the heating is on a lot more. Don’t forget to also check the air ducts and filter on your air conditioning unit as this system can also work less efficiently if anything happens to them.
Cleaning The Refrigerator
We all know that we need to do it more often than we do, but who has time to empty out the whole refrigerator and give it a good clean these days?! Well, even if you are busy, it’s still good to try and keep on top of the cleanliness of your refrigerator as it will really improve the hygiene and quality of all the food inside. Generally speaking, you should try and clean it out ever six months. This gives you the chance to get right to the back of the fridge and remove any long-forgotten food items that may have gone off. It’s also a good idea to wipe it out with an antibacterial cloth.
Reviewing The Property’s Insulation
There are lots of homeowners who rarely think about their property’s insulation. They think that there is no need to do anything to it after it has been installed. However, that isn’t always the case. If your home’s insulation has been in place for a number of years, it could be worth checking it and replacing any old and inefficient areas. As well as the actual insulation that has been put in between the walls and under the roof, it’s also wise to check your windows. This is even useful if they are double glazed. There is always new technology being used in double glazing, so you might want to see if a company like Renewal by Andersen can upgrade your windows to use all of the latest materials and insulation technology. And then there will be no way you ever suffer from drafts and poor insulation again!
Cleaning The Windows
Speaking of windows, another household maintenance job that is often forgotten about is cleaning the windows. Of course, if you don’t want to have to get your ladders out to get up to clean your upper-floor windows, you can always hire a window cleaner to come and take care of this for you. However, window cleaners rarely clean the inside of windows for their customers, so you will still have to take care of this bit. Try to clean them every couple of months to ensure that they always sparkle.
Cleaning Out Gutters
People often think that you only need to clean out your gutters after bad weather and an excessive rainfall. That really isn’t the case, though. In fact, it’s worth making sure they are cleared out every three to four months. Lots of dead leaves and other detritus can build up in the gutter and if there is ever a blockage rainwater could drip down the building. If this is left for too long, you might need to fix some water damage on your property.
Don’t delay with these jobs!
