Summer cleaning
Interestingly, a lot of the time it’s not clear that your house is in desperate need of; it’s more akin to a process of decluttering, organization and getting rid of junk. The process of cleaning, itself, is pretty simple and effortless – yet, when things are a mess, the state of chaos can feel overwhelming to the point you don’t even know where to start.
There have been many studies that link having a tidy home with a tidy mind; meaning, it is now scientifically proven that a cluttered house will contribute if not cause a cluttered mind.
This is why it’s so important to keep on top of our homes… as the to-do list that for most people is overflowing, when it comes to home chores, can niggle away at you on a daily basis affecting your sense of self-esteem.
What should I clean each summer?
Each summer here are a few areas to focus on when you are doing your summer cleaning:
- Back Porch/Deck
- Window sills, screens, and glass
- Garden area
- Entryway
- Full house clean
Now you know of the areas to focus on during your summer cleaning now it’s time to share a few more in-depth summer cleaning tips with you.
Summer cleaning starts with decluttering
The all-important step of decluttering, which is at the base of this process, naturally leads to the next phase of ‘getting organized’. The process of decluttering doesn’t have to be a cutthroat approach of throwing everything out. If the Marie Condo method makes you twitch, baby steps are better than not doing anything at all.
Decluttering your home is a natural precursor to getting organized; for it’s almost impossible to be organized when there is clutter everywhere. Clutter has been known to create stress and even depression, particularly in people living in small or dark homes.
Takeaway tips:
- Try decluttering a small section like a drawer, shelf, or table
- Open a (or two) window to allow natural light to brighten up your home
- Living with less clutter will help your mood
Summer cleaning tips by getting organized
Now that you’ve gotten some (or all) of the decluttering done, it’s time to get organized. Making sure that there’s a place for everything is one way to keep your home clutter-free, organized, and clean.
Using drawer organizers and having stations for things that cause “an unorganized look” will keep your home looking clean and organized.
Creating stations in your home will keep you organized. Examples of stations you could create are things like:
- Homework station
- Coats, shoes, and backpacks
- Bill/mail station
There are great products you can look into to getting more organized throughout the house. Getting your kitchen, bathroom, entryway, and more of your home organized will help you live in a home that makes you happy.
Summer cleaning your outdoor space
Summertime means BBQ’s, parties, or just hanging out outside. One important area to focus on is your outdoor space. Cleaning, organizing, and/or updating your outdoor space will motivate you to spend more time outside.
Here’s a list of things to do to clean your outdoor space:
- Clean and treat your deck
- Remove debris from deck, walls, and windows
- Update your furniture cushions (bright colors are always a good choice here)
- Add flowers and plants into containers to brighten up your deck
- Add an umbrella
- Set out a weatherproof rug
Enjoying a clean, organized, and bright “summery” space will give you reasons to throw more outdoor parties and spend more time outdoors this summer.
Summer cleaning your home
Most importantly, check off those dreaded chores this summer. It is okay if you missed the spring cleaning. Places like light fixtures, baseboards, and under appliances don’t get cleaned on a regular.
Summer is the perfect time to roll up your sleeves and clean some of those neglected areas. The problem might be you just don’t know where to start or what to clean.
This is the perfect time to move furniture and vacuum/sweep in those areas, cleaning out the dryer vent, and setting your oven to self-clean are just a few things to focus on this summer.

This has arrived at the perfect time. I live in a two bedroom flat/apartment and have noticed that it is looking a bit drab. So yesterday I started to declutter the master bedroom, one small step at a time. I picked a corner where our chest of drawers are, decluttered, moved out the furniture, cleaned the walls, floors, skirting boards and the item of furniture. Today I have decluttered around the window, moved our dresser out, cleaned it, washed the windows, walls and skirting boards. Each day I am planning to repeat the process and work my way around the room. I am hoping to finish by the end of the week, making notes of anything that needs repairing (the curtain rod looks like it needs screwing back into the wall more securely). Once completed we are going to give the room a fresh new coat of paint. We have visitors arriving in 6 weeks so it has given us a boost to get on top of things. Five more rooms to go!!
That’s wonderful! It sounds like you’re doing a great job. Keep it up and make sure to look at all of the work you’ve completed and congratulate yourself. You’re doing great!
